Celexa Side Effects
Patients who take Celexa often experience significant side effects that often lead to lawsuits because of the suffering, lost income, and other repercussions that result from taking the drug.
Celexa (also known as citalopram hydrobromide) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant and shares a lot of side effects and risks that are associated with other drugs in the SSRI family. Depression affects different patients in different ways and so do antidepressant medications. Although many patients respond favorably to treatment with Celexa, a large number of patients suffer from Celexa side effects to some extent.
Frequent side effects
Common symptoms that result from Celexa use include drowsiness, nausea, dry mouth, insomnia, tremors, inordinate sweating, male sexual dysfunction and diarrhea. In many cases, drowsiness and insomnia can result in significant personal injury and sexual performance issues can disrupt relationships and cause serious quality of life issues. When severe, the other side effects can also become disruptive enough to prompt a patient to consider legal action to cover bills and compensate for losses incurred from Celexa side effects.
Pregnancy
Other side effects from Celexa are even more problematic. For example, women who take the drug during pregnancy put their child at risk of developing a condition called persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), a serious lung problem that can require extensive and expensive treatment.
Celexa has also been found to put babies at risk for birth defects that affect the brain and skull, abdominal organs and sutures on the head, according to the Mayo clinic.
Studies have also show risk to children who are breastfeeding from a mother who is on Celexa.
When women give birth to children with defects stemming from the use of Celexa, it is understandable when they investigate possibilities for legal recourse, especially when the doctor or psychiatrist was aware of the pregnancy at the time Celexa was prescribed.
Suicide and suicidal thoughts
Significant personal injury may result from one side effect of Celexa, suicidal thoughts. Although the the dangers of antidepressant use in adolescents is well-known, they are often prescribed Celexa as a treatment for depression.
Recent studies have shown a connection between one SSRI, Paxil, and suicideal ideation in adults, suggesting that suicide as a side effect may be more prevalent in adults then previously thought.
In light of the known dangers of Celexa, impairment and expenses related to attempted suicides and damages resulting from successful suicides may call for the pursuit of legal remedies and compensation, depending on the surrounding circumstances.
Other known issues
Sever Celexa side effects have been associated with the drug when taken by patients suffering from liver disease, bipolar disorder or epilepsy. Also, Celexa and other antidepressants have been presented as factors in a number of violent incidents such as the school shooting in Columbine.
The side effects mentioned here are just some that may result from taking the antidepressant drug, Celexa. If you or a family member have been harmed as a result of taking this drug, you should immediately seek legal advice. Doing so often involves a free consultation that can help explore your options before time limits in state law expire, leaving you without recourse.
